Understanding 2g, 3g & 4g

2g was introduced in 1991

3g was introduced in 2001

4g was introduced in 2009

2g is still used around the world today – despite its high-power consumption by today’s standards – especially with European IoT adopters and companies that can look to 2G technology for its low price point, ubiquitous coverage and same “fast enough” fundamental characteristic as its apparent  Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) solutions.

3G is the third generation of wireless mobile telecommunications technology. It is the upgrade for 2.5G GPRS and 2.75G EDGE networks, for faster data transfer.[1] This is based on a set of standards used for mobile devices and mobile telecommunications use services and networks that comply with the International Mobile Telecommunications-2000 (IMT-2000) specifications by the International Telecommunication Union. 3G finds application in wireless voice telephony, mobile Internet access, fixed wireless Internet access, video calls and mobile TV

4G is the fourth generation of broadband cellular network technology, succeeding 3G, and preceding 5G. A 4G system must provide capabilities defined by ITU in IMT Advanced. Potential and current applications include amended mobile web access, IP telephony, gaming services, high-definition mobile TVvideo conferencing, and 3D television.

All About Me

I started in 2012 with the telit modules which worked well but were expensive later 2 years later out came the sim800 and sim900 which were much cheaper but had their own issues, but still worked well, later that year the sim800L came and worked perfectly and have been using this 2g sim for many years and still some out there from 2015.

Last year we started to hear rumor's about 2g being axed from the network thus we had to find an alternative, we stayed with simcom due to their reliability and have successfully tested 3g and 4g modules, 5g modules are not even worth dealing with right now as they start at £300 each just for the module, pricing difference from 2g to 3g approx £20 extra, from 2g to 4g approx £35 extra, we have ordered a batch of 3g / 4g modules and shall be on sale very shortly for future proofing of our GSM's.

PLEASE NOTE CHINESE VERSIONS OF THE 3G AND 4G ON SALE BUT BE CAREFUL THEY ARE NOT JUST 2G !! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.....
